Sparking the Interest of my Students with Science and Coding
My students need science journals and DVDs, along with some interactive, high-interest books that spark student interest in coding.

My Students
I am fortunate to be part of a school that strives for excellence. We meet students' needs in rigorous teaching strategies and expect only the best from our students.
My school is proud to be a "Leader in Me" school that works on taking author Steven Covey's 7 Habits, and making them age-appropriate and working them into our school campus so that students begin to see their campus as a way to show leadership.
The "Leader in Me" is not a curriculum, but rather a way of doing life on the school campus through awareness of how we learn and grow, and how we speak and treat one another.
Students learning the habit of solving conflicts, then becoming conflict managers, is just one way of the Leader in Me program in action on our campus. Students take the 7 habits that are taught to them and begin to think of ways they can take ownership of their campus through leadership. Whether it's a 5th grader helping a 1st grader to read, students setting goals and overcoming academic obstacles, or students seeing a need to clean their campus, all are ways that the 7 habits teach students to lead on campus.
My Project
I am requesting Daily Science Journals, enough for each student to have their own journal. Students will use these on a daily basis to record their answers from reading science articles and responding to cite evidence. These journals allow students to keep all their work in one, organized place.
These journals also allow me to check for understanding, of how the students responded, in an efficient and timely manner.
The science DVDs being requested will be used once a month, on a Fun Friday, to provide some engagement in a fun way of wrapping up our Science units.
In addition, I have picked out some books that have been recommended to me by other teachers, that our high-interest books, that draw in reluctant readers into some topics they might enjoying reading. For example, the Secret Coders book requested is on teaching coding. It is a fiction book, that is written in chapter form, so that students practice fluency while learning about an interest of topic in coding. The book illustrates a story of a boy learning coding and using it to help build a robot for his school. I envision this sparking interest in both boys and girls in the early process of learning coding. Students will be allowed to read these books once they have finished the work for the week.
