Energy, passion, excitement, and determination are all words that come to mind when I'm asked to describe the room full of scholars that walk in my door every morning for 180 days. Their home lives are varied and a large percentage of them come from families that qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Many of them have very supportive, involved parents, and others have parents whose attention is spread very thin. But no matter their lives at home, they are so excited to learn new things and love coming to school each day!
My Project
It seems that every year, there are more and more students that come through my room who struggle with being able to put themselves in someone else's shoes. This causes some significant social challenges in the classroom, and also uses up lots of instructional time teaching on the spot communication mini lessons.
I am hoping that this story will spark conversations that will result in my students being a little more caring, patient and kind towards each other, a skill that will last them their entire lives.
"Wonder" is a fantastic story of a boy born with facial abnormalities who decides to enter public school. It is told from the perspective of the main character, August, which gives students a fascinating window into the mind of someone in a situation they will likely never experience themselves.
