Sparking It Up With Technology and Knowledge During P.E.

My students need two Chromebools, a SPARK PE Curriculum Set, and one HKC Balance My Nutrition curriculum 3-set to learn about nutrition and health during their P.E. classes.

My Students

I teach Physical Education at an elementary school located in North Miami. My students now have recess in addition to PE, which means that the demand for physical education supplies has almost doubled in order to accommodate all students.

My school has a high number of students who were affected after Hurricane Irma devastated our community and now we are welcoming students from Puerto Rico who were displaced by Hurricane Maria.

My school also has a high number of students who are high poverty, ESOL, and ELL, and there are a few who are Special Education and gifted.

Our students love to exercise, but due to the devastation of Hurricane Irma, the parks, and surrounding grounds are still not safe for them to play in. Also, they need to learn how to keep themselves healthy holistically, which means nutrition and health education needs to be incorporated into our P.E. curriculum.

My Project

Our students are very active and enthusiastic when it comes to outdoor activities and sports, but many are unaware of how their body works and how to eat and stay healthy. Being mostly children living in a high poverty community, good nutrition and healthy habits are not always everyday day options, and if not taught, these children could become susceptible to avoidable illnesses and disease, not to mention childhood obesity.

The Chromebooks are requested because there are no workstations for our physical education program and because I am always teaching outside on the PE Court or traveling from class to class on rainy days, so I need devices that are portable.

The SPARK Digital Curriculum consists of 3 years of access to the entire AS section of the SPARKfamily.org. school curriculum, providing a complete e-Manual with digital files of all content including instructional videos of SPARK activities and dances. There are also interactive alignment/assessment tools along with audio files for use with an iPod or MP3 player included.

Using the classroom's SmartBoard, I can access the HKC Balance My Nutrition curriculum online and teach health and nutrition as well as run dance CDs and interactive sessions online with my students. Your donation would impact all students from grades 2 through 5 for the next three years and will help them learn how to take care of their bodies while having fun at the same time.
