I work in a large elementary school, in an urban school district, with 60% of our 580 students labeled as high-needs. Nearly 50% of students are economically disadvantaged, and over 20% of our students are identified as having a disability.
Our students are some of the most hard-working children I have ever met despite the challenges they face each day.
They remain positive in the face of adversity and motivate me to better myself, my teaching strategies, and our classroom environment.
My Project
I am a literacy coach for an elementary school and would like to get some mentor texts to share with the K-5 teachers that spark conversations about justice, race and racism.
As protests are happening over the killing of George Floyd, many teachers and parents are wondering how to talk about this mans death and explain race and racism to children in kindergarten to fifth grade.
Our school is a diverse school, and we need to have more literature that sparks these conversations and that represents the ethnicities of our students.
These books would be held and highlighted in our library for teachers to checkout and share with their students.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
