Sparking Classroom Magic by Creating a Collaborative Space

Help me give my students bar stools as one of their flex seating options for students who are independently working w/ chromebooks. Also, bean bag chairs for a comfortable reading area.

My Project

Many of my students face obstacles other students their age often do not experience. This Fall, I enter my fourth year at my school and I spend a lot of time breaking down emotional walls with my students. Before I can teach them, I must first reach them. My goal is to create a flexible classroom that cultivates collaborative learning in the language arts-reading and writing setting. My classroom project will give my students the tools and environment to reach literacy and writing goals without the social and emotional stress they come up against in their community.

A flexible seating classroom will allow my students to maneuver through stations and small group-led lessons in a functional way.

Also, my plan to have a countertop bar with stools gives many of my students options to work independently. Classrooms are moving to the digital age thanks to chrome books and other electronic devices and the lack of space or freedom to charge their devices is a major disruption in class. That would be eliminated with my flex- seating setting.

Most importantly, this environment would cater to my students with various IEPs, disabilities, and learning styles. I know that it will be a success from my experience of hosting class in our media center. Students are more independent, more focused on their tasks, and turn in quality work in collaborative spaces.
