Sparking a Love of Literacy in Fifth Grade Students

My students need interesting books to help spark their love of reading as well as a bookcase to store them.

My Students

My students come from military families and have unique backgrounds. I teach on a military base, which means all of my students have either one or both parents in the military. These students have traveled all over and often switch schools.

Many of my fifth grade students are faced with a parent being deployed.

My students have amazing backgrounds but also carry a lot of stress. It is extremely important to me to create a safe and stable environment within my classroom. I want my students to know that my class will always be a stable factor in their lives. My students start the school year at a variety of reading levels and I would love to be able to provide challenging books for each student.

My Project

As a first year teacher that recently moved to the area, it can be difficult to financially supply everything students need to learn. I want to provide students with interesting books that they have not read before. I believe it is important to spark their love of literacy at a young age.

When looking for books, I wanted to find ones that not only entertained my students, but could also spark a passion for reading in them.

I picked three unique books that have sparked this passion in students in the past. Running Out of Time has many historical references within it that can be tied to events in history. City of Ember is a book that has sparked many young readers to start thinking outside of the box. James and the Giant Peach is a classic novel that encourages students to let their imagination grow. All of these book sets will be used as whole class novels. The book shelve will provide a safe storage area so that the books can be used for years to come.
