We are a Title I school and funding is very limited. We do work on variety of projects. These things are costly to me but I do it because I know their successes (or lack thereof) depends on what I can do for them.
Since students have to read and cite evidence about their readings, why not catch their interests with something that is compelling, entertaining, and current?
Having students become motivated about reading is an extremely daunting task. It's an issue that is becoming more and more difficult to tackle. How do we do this?
My Project
I would like to provide my students with a class set (30) hard copies of the novel, "The Hate You Give" by Angie Thomas and a class set copy of " Dear Martin" by Nic Stone. There is already a struggle with students, especially those that don't like to read, to do the classic books that are required, but I would like to draw them in.
I want to get and keep a momentum going by doing novels that deal with current issues.
Something that they can relate to and sparks an interest.
My biggest struggle has been doing the standard and content required but doing it so it doesn't seem like a chore. These two novels are motivating and captivate current issues that students can relate to whether they are black, white, or Latino.
