My students need nonfiction books that tell of important people, locations and events that changed our world. They also need graphic novels that motivate them to read.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember enjoying a book so much that you could not put it down? The very details spurned you to imagine that you were living during that time. My students have not had this experience.
My students are inner city kids that come from homes where books are not available or valued.
Reading is seen as a chore, something to be done because it is assigned, rather than because it is enjoyed. They have limited knowledge of important facts, historical events or essential vocabulary because of their limited exposure to reading. The books that we do have in the classroom are old, and not very interesting. We do not have a lot of biographical or historical books that could facilitate projects, group work or reader' theater.
My Project
With this books, I could expose students to key events in our world (civil war and great depression). We could study essential people and how they altered both their own lives and ultimately changed their world (Alexander Bell and Thomas Edison). These books will be used as a springboard for helping students engage in project-based learning. They could not only read about the lives of these important inventors, historical heroes but become inspired to dream their own dreams. Through research projects, group discussions and individualized presentations, students will use these books as resources to help them learn and apply what they learned to their own lives and aspirations.
Your gift will be instrumental in forever shaping the mind and future of my students.
These resources will allow my students to learn from the past, and form great reading habits and research skills right now that will prepare them for their future. Your gift of books, resources and learning will be used year after year to new groups of students. Because of your gift, learning habits will be taught and a desire to be someone will be instilled in the life of my students.
