As a first-grade teacher and a book lover, I want to be able to give my students the opportunity to see what chapter books are all about. We read for 10 minutes when we come in from lunch to help us regroup and calm down. Up until now, I have been reading picture books but I believe that I can help my students' comprehension skills by starting to read bigger books. A lot of my students are not capable of reading a chapter book but that doesn't mean that they should not be able to use their imaginations to get lost in another world while I'm reading to them.
I would love to be able to scaffold their comprehension skills by reading them chapter books such as Fly Guy, which will still allow them to see a picture while having to remember what happened in the previous chapter.
I would love to get to the point where my students are comprehending books like The Magic Treehouse. I know that a lot of my students would already enjoy listening to more sequential stories. I want my students to find joy in reading and see what they are working towards being able to read by themselves! Books are amazing and I want my students to love them as much as I do!
