Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Oscar de la Hoya Animo Charter High School is a public school open to students in the East Los Angeles/Boyle Heights area. It is a small school with 140 students in each grade level. I am the Spanish III and AP Spanish Language teacher, the Spanish Department Chair, and a member of the AP committee on campus. One of the activities that I do in class is expose students to music and arts from different Spanish speaking countries, such as mariachi music from Mexico, historical movies from South America, or art pieces from Spanish painters. The students really enjoy the different themes touched upon in the arts. Also, they are exposed to different Spanish accents and dialects in the movies and music. We do several activities from acquiring vocabulary, reading about the country of origin and its history, as well as writing in different styles, such as movie critiques, or rewriting endings to the plot. Having a collection of Spanish DVD's and CD's and art books makes the class interesting and comes alive and sparks discussion. As Department Chair, I would provide a list of movies and songs that the other Spanish teachers in the other grade levels could use in the classroom so that all students taking Spanish would be exposed to the culture of the different Spanish speaking countries.
