Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Despite some of the challenges they face in and around their environment, every year my students come to school excited, full of life, and eager to learn.

I am going back to teaching Pre-K this year.

This year will be very different due to COVID-19. I will serve approximately 15-20 students for the 2020-2021 school year with a wide range of abilities, needs, and concerns. My students are in a low income/high poverty school in which more than 80% of the students receive free or reduced-price meals.

When children have a strong foundation of learning, they are able to stay on track to remain in school, graduate, and pursue post-secondary education and training to successfully transition into adulthood.

Children make my classroom their home for however long they stay and miss it dearly when they move on. No matter who enters through my classroom doors, they become part of our school family. So this year, I want to make my students as safe as possible in the classroom and provide items to help them during remote learning.

My Project

Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media. Media literate youth and adults are better able to understand the complex messages we receive from television, radio, the internet, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, video games, music, and all other forms of media.

Let's Find Out will reinforce media literacy, seasonal science/social studies themes that support our curriculum, and provide take-home resources!

Students must learn 20 uppercase letter/20 lowercase letters/20 sounds, count 1-30 and create a pattern by the end of Pre-K.

The Scholastic Magazines will help develop academic vocabulary in every issue. Furthermore, letters, counting, and patterning are supplemented through fun activities included in each issue. Language development will be enhanced as the students use rhymes and songs that build phonological awareness.

Some students require a lot of movement. Their needs will be taken care of through action rhymes and sign language that keep wiggly kids learning! Learning videos, text-to-speech audio, printables, and over-sized versions of each issue for whole-class reading will provide a variety of ways for students to learn.

Students will connect learning from school at home with the send-home issues and online access for caregivers. Students need to know that learning is important at school and at home. The magazines will engage my English/Spanish-language learners. Simple, repetitive texts build essential early reading skills. The students experience cultural immersion with special issues, traditional songs, and cultural notes. English versions are online with read-aloud text for transitional student games, all in Spanish and English!
