Spanish Literacy Project

My Project

In order to foster a welcome environment for our students to encompass all facets of their heritage, we are hoping to expand the Spanish language selections available to our students through a partnership with our Elementary English Language department and the school Librarian. We are grateful for our recent increase in English Language Learners at our school, and with 47% of those students as Spanish speakers we want to develop a relationship not only with the concept of a bilingual student, but a biliterate student. In order to further our goals of biliteracy we hope to have our older students begin nurturing and mentoring our younger students through reading in their heritage language during learning block. The resource of Spanish language books will provide our upper elementary students the service based experience of mentoring our young English Language Learners, and serving as an academic role model to our lower elementary students.
