Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are Kindergarten scholars so their experience in my classroom is their foundation to what education is. My students prior background to letters, alphabet sounds, and read-aloud books is often-times minimal. Their first teachers, their parents/grand-parents teach mostly through verbal conversations and these conversations are mostly Spanish-spoken.
My goal with my students and their parents is to keep their Spanish-speaking educational relationship, I want it to progress instead of diminish.
My students' language is something that we, as educators, should build upon and praise for using within the classroom.
My Project
My students will speak and learn Spanish alongside English. They will do this by being introduced to both languages in as many concepts taught possible.
The students will use the listening center by listening to stories in English and Spanish and hear the relationships between languages.
They will use classroom alphabet manipulatives to engage new English learners in hands-on activities to build their knowledge of letters and sounds.
I believe the listening center and alphabet locks will improve their learning by showing the students that their native language is valuable by having their language in the classroom. The repetitive use of Spanish in school by listening to it and being able to talk about it will build a stronger relationship of bilingual learning.
