Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are English Language Learners from many diverse backgrounds. They all wonderful and eager to learn. They like to read and discuss texts to demonstrate their understanding and interests across a wide range of topics. I serve my students through all contents and support them with native language support, scaffolds for English language fluency and ESL instruction.

My students are working hard to build our English fluency and proficiency while also maintaining a positive classroom environment where they can also celebrate their varied cultural backgrounds and express themselves through literature, art, and other fun learning activities.

My Project

During recent monthly Bilingual Advisory Committee meetings many parents stressed the desire and importance for their children to be able to practice reading and writing skills in their native language to continue to engage in the use of it to further develop comprehension and proficiency in it. Their points are valid, however, funding for such a class or even enrichment materials was unavailable. Our Spanish speaking family population is approximately 40% making it nearly impossible to be a dual-language school or having Spanish self-contained classrooms. To make matters worse, our student population is "too small" to have a Spanish immersion or World Language Class and bilingual students who become more proficient in English run the risk of falling back in Spanish proficiency. Regardless of that, they still demonstrate the desire speak, read, and write in Spanish.

Their perseverance (and that of their parents) to want to learn to read and write Spanish has inspired me to continue seeking funding to be able to provide them with packets that will help them engage in Spanish in order to retain their native language, and become more proficient.

The materials in this order will allow me to select documents that can be printed and shared with parents so they can teach and support students based on their level of Spanish proficiency. Aside from helping students master the foundational comprehension and writing skills in Spanish, these documents and worksheets will allow students and parents to engage in culturally relevant art and writing projects, history and social studies, and other engaging activities appropriate to their grade levels.
