My students need a classroom library in Spanish in order to be exposed to more short stories, poems, and essays and to increase their vocabulary.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is the first one to be built in the neighborhood in over 30 years. It serves a largely Latino population. Research shows that Latinos are still underrepresented in post-secondary institutions. The mission of our school is to prepare students for college. One of the ways that we hope to do that is by offering Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
I currently teach AP Spanish Language to a mixed group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. While most of these students grew up in a Spanish-speaking household, many still have difficulty with the reading and writing. Spanish may be their fist language, but it was never formally taught to them in the classroom.
AP Spanish Language is a college level course. Students take an AP exam offered by the College Board in May of 2010. While I do my best to prepare them in class by having students read, write, listen to audio, and speak proper Spanish, it would be helpful to expose them to additional literature that peaks their interest. This can be accomplished by having a myriad of reading materials in the classroom, such as short stories, newspapers, and magazines in Spanish.
The books that are selected for the proposed Spanish Classroom Library are full texts of the literature written by authors from the Spanish speaking world. They range in topics from the fantastical to the poetry; authors from Latin America to authors from Spain.
Your donation will provide a variety of books to keep in the classroom so that students can read at their leisure. Besides preparing students for the AP exam, it is important to instill in them an appreciation for literature.
