Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hot Wells is a brand new school. Our students are over 90% Latinos with social-economic setbacks that have been exacerbated by the pandemic. We are a Title I school on the outskirts of the newly planned Brooks City Base on the southeast side of San Antonio. A portion of our population are newcomers wielding Spanish as their primary language. Our library is lacking book resources and students do not have access to stories they can understand in their dominant language.
My Project
These books will help reluctant readers of English books, by helping them to access the stories their friends are discussing. These books will be shelved in a highly visible area of the library. Students are allowed to come to the library. Having these Spanish editions will allow students access stories where they can imagine fantastical worlds as well as realistic fiction. I expect to see an increase in student traffic and as well as reading enjoyment in the different library spaces.
This project will help newcomer (immigrant) students understand the intricacies of a new country and help them assimilate into mainstream culture.
These new books will allow students to move from the back of the room and allow them to participate meaningfully in classes with their peers and teachers.
