This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I co-teach 42 dual language students. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and languages. Although they are faced with many challenges both at home and in the classroom, their curiosity and eagerness to learn helps them succeed at school. They enjoy engaging in creative and meaningful hands-on learning experiences. I teach at a Title 1 school where 89% of our students are considered in poverty and are receiving free or reduced lunch and have limited opportunities. The opportunities I can provide to my students will help them stretch their thinking and grow in learning!
My Project
This will be my second year teaching in a dual language immersion program. I want to continue building an inviting classroom library. The Spanish books I have selected will be a great addition to our library. I chose engaging and cultural fiction and nonfiction picture books for beginner readers. The students will have access to great literature such as La leyenda encantada del Coqui, Los cuentos de Sapo y Sepo and Los Tiburones during our reading time. It's important for my first graders to have daily access to great literature in Spanish. These books will allow them to practice and enjoy reading in Spanish. Research shows that, "Developing proficiency in two languages is associated positively with greater cognitive flexibility and awareness of language, which contributes to academic achievement."
