My Students

I teach first grade in a new dual language program in Brooklyn. My students need Spanish books for our classroom library. Two years ago, our school started a dual language program, and we still need materials for the class.

I have 27 first graders who love to read in English and Spanish.

In our school, 57% of the students receive free or reduced-price meals. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. They enjoy participating in literacy activities, and they are eager new writers and readers.

My Project

I would like to have book series, such as Judy Moody, Henry and Mudge, Frog and Toad in Spanish so my students can learn about how an author develops different characters. If I had these books, I could read to our class one day in English and then continue the same book in Spanish the next day, so my students could practice following the story in both languages. This year, thanks to DonorsChoose, I was able to get some new books, but I still need more for my most advanced readers.

Literacy is connected to all of our content areas.

Unfortunately, getting the right books in Spanish is a big challenge. My students read at different levels, so I need books that are at each student's level to be able to scaffold their learning. Having these books will support all learning areas and teach them to appreciate the world of learning that reading brings.
