Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a STC Early Childhood Coordinator I serve 50 children from 0-5. My caseload is majority Spanish speaking and most are seasonal workers. I am based at an elementary school in Western, WA. Our school district is a 100% free and reduced district and is about 30% Hispanic/Latinx. For my shopping list, I focused on purchasing Spanish books that are culturally relevant to the children and families I serve. Spanish books tend to be more expensive and harder to come by in rural communities.

Most of my parents/caregivers speak Spanish and do not read or speak English.

By getting Spanish books, I will be encouraging families to read together and build each other’s literacy in both languages. The books selected are also culturally relevant to the community I serve, and children/families can see themselves in the literature and content.
