This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with some of the most hardworking and delightful 5th graders. They are predominantly hispanic and enrolled in a dual language program. They work diligently to balance and embrace the cognitive challenges of billiteracy - their work ethic is truly inspirational. Every morning they greet me with enthusiastic eyes and open hearts as I pick them up from their morning line up. They are always eager to learn and expand on their cognitive abilities. Their minds are quite like clay - so moldable.

My Project

My students are becoming more avid readers. However, our school has limited Spanish chapter books to support a book study of 40+ students. Book study discussions are a powerful way to increase their participation and their love of reading. This model is seen more and more in middle school and our elementary students would benefit greatly from a book study during literacy class.

It is our duty to provide these students with the tools necessary for their billiteracy seal.

Students will be expanding on their literacy and writing skills by analyzing the text. They will be discussing and studying the major themes in this novel. Each class will be divided into reading groups and will read and blog about each chapter. Their final product will consist of a book commercial recommending this book to incoming 5th graders.
