This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My English Language Learners are doing everything they can to reinforce their native proficiency as well as beginning their transition to English proficiency. Unfortunately, we lack sufficient Spanish, bilingual and Hispanic heritage books for these Early Readers.

Most of my students are English Language Learners who speak Spanish at home and throughout the school day in class and with their classmates.

They are Early Readers. Our urban neighborhood elementary is a 100% Title I school with a population of 97% Hispanics and 70% English Language Learners. Our school's highest priority is to help our scholars to successfully transition from a good background in Spanish to a good foundation in English, nevertheless, we remain seriously deficient in Spanish and bilingual reading materials that are readily accessible and sensitive to their prior knowledge.

My Project

With the use of new and accessible AJK graphic books in Spanish and English/Spanish, my Early Readers will be able to spend more time reading towards native language or English proficiency, depending upon their knowledge... and they will have plenty of fun in the process. These new resources will help my students to meet our school mission of having each student advance one grade level per year.

Donations to this important literacy project will improve our classroom significantly because these Spanish, bilingual and Spanish heritage books will provide the opportunity for increased reading comprehension.

The students will thus be better prepared for future learning and successful development towards our goal of graduating global graduates.
