This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate and hungry for education. As a science teacher, I am excited and overjoyed to see that my students are so interested in understanding how science shapes the world around them. However, I service extremely under privileged students in an impoverished, urban community where resources are scarce. I service students from ages eleven to fourteen who range in gender, ethnicicity, interest and learning abilities. In this extremely diverse community, I am responsible for educating all students no matter their academic level, need, ability and interest. Daily, I teach approximately ninety students in my classroom, thirty students each class session. I find that in my classroom, we struggle with space as well as understanding spacial awareness. I'd like to introduce flexible seating options to my students, allowing the comfort of learning in their own unique space throughout the classroom. I'd like to organize my classroom for areas of computer accessibility. I'd like to offer smaller table and grouping areas for English language learners who require smaller settings. I'd like to create a safe and comfortable space where learning happens naturally.
My Project
Picture this... sitting in a science lab at a table crammed together with four other middle school students in a class of thirty students, while engaging in project based learning. Students to the left of you are engaged in scientific discussion based on observations. To the right, others are conducting investigation manipulating materials, measuring materials constructing with material, just making a mess. You are trying to complete a lab report in a cluttered and chaotic environment. Now, do you feel very productive? I can imagine this is how my ninety students feel daily. I am finding myself struggling with my classroom space. Daily, I have to remind my students as well as myself to be mindful and respectful of others space in this constraining learning environment. This year, I'd like to introduce flexible seating options to my students allowing them the comfort of learning in their own unique space throughout the classroom. I'd like to organize my classroom for areas of computer accessibility. I'd like to offer smaller table and grouping areas for English language learners who require smaller settings. I'd like to create a safe, comfortable and cool space where learning happens naturally, as my content of science does.
