My Project
As a Special Education teacher, I get to be a consistent guide in my students' lives all four years of their high school experience. However, what has not been consistent is our classroom environment. Over the last four years, we have had to pack up our whole classroom and move into a new space three different times. Every year we try to make whatever space we move into work for us, but this last year was especially rough. The classroom we moved into was not particularly well-suited for our needs (lack of whiteboards, limited space, outdated projector set-up) and throughout the year myself and the students tried to make the classroom our space despite the difficulties.
Given our current classroom situation, hearing that we would be moving again next year was both a relief and a burden.
Having to move around so much, and adjust to new parameters of our settings, we haven't gotten to really put time and effort into designing a classroom environment and decor that meets our needs. My hope for this project is that I will get the foundation to create a comfortable and welcoming learning space. A supportive classroom environment improves focus, student well-being, and motivation to learn. I want to make a space students feel is their own.
