I teach in an urban elementary school in Central Massachusetts. I currently teach English Language Arts and Social Studies to two classes of 5th graders from many diverse backgrounds. Some students are ELL, from a variety of countries and are learning to be proficient in English. Other students have needs outside of school due to many factors. Academically, students range from above grade level, to needing interventions to access curriculum.
My class is amazing!
They enjoy hands on projects, and I try to make as many of my lessons as interactive as possible. These students have had a great introduction to technology using chromebooks, and we try to integrate google apps and classroom in our daily classroom activities. I hope to engage students to be creative, independent, and kind citizens. I know their futures are bright!
My Project
My students are rarely in their seats. Between project based learning and small group instruction, my class is always moving around the classroom.
By creating flexible seating options, I could give my growing 5th graders more room and areas to work, read, and collaborate within my classroom.
I feel this will not only keep them engaged, but will allow them to interact with myself and each other more effectively.
We meet as a class daily, and having a space with a rug would give the students a comfortable and clean meeting place to have class discussions or have groups meet together.
