My students need an inviting space to read and rejuvenate. This is part of a larger project to give my classroom a makeover, in the hopes of creating a more flexible and encouraging learning space.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are incredible. They are all recent immigrants and refugees from every corner of the world. They come from over 40 countries and speak over 35 languages. They are hardworking, dedicated, supportive, creative and generally wise beyond their years. Most of all, while they have been through so much, their resilience is admirable.
These students bring their whole lives to the classroom and have so much to teach each other and their teachers.
I am often in awe of my students and am inspired by them every single day. Each day with them is a new adventure, one I feel so fortunate to be a part of.
My Project
I like to give students time for independent reading, but sometimes it's challenging to shift from classwork, or group work, to quiet reading. Having a space where they feel comfortable and encouraged to read can help those who need a stronger transition from one activity to the next. Ideally, the space will also be used before and after school, motivating students to read as much as possible.
In addition to a reading nook, I envision an arts and crafts option in the space, as the idea is to have a space where students can de-stress, relax, create and rejuvenate.
I'm fortunate to have a variety of books for all my students' reading levels, and I also have some fun art supplies. All that's missing is an alternative space to explore these further!
