My Project

Creating Calm: A Safe Space for Big Feelings

My first graders are full of energy, curiosity, and heart, but like all young children, they’re still learning how to manage big emotions.

In a classroom as busy and vibrant as ours, it’s so important to have a peaceful place where students can take a break, breathe, and regroup when they feel overwhelmed. That’s why I’m working to create a well-equipped Calm Corner in our classroom. With tools like breathing balls, fidget items, visual calming prompts, mindfulness books, and soft seating, this space will help students regulate their emotions in a healthy and constructive way.

Giving students a safe space to calm down supports both their emotional well-being and their ability to learn. When students feel dysregulated, it can be hard to focus, participate, or retain new information. A thoughtfully designed Calm Corner gives them what they need to pause, reset, and return to learning ready and refreshed. Many of my students face challenges outside of school that impact their emotional health. This project helps me provide consistent support and teach lifelong coping strategies—all within our classroom community.
