Space Sparks Their Imaginations!

My students need a field lesson to the Kennedy Space Center to spark their imagination and create a life-long thirst for science education. Nothing inspires like space!

My Students

Getting students out of the classroom and into the amazing state in which they live is one of the major goals at our school. KIPP students go to school longer and do more work than their peers, so it is so important for them to see and experience how education can change our world, and beyond!

The average KIPP day begins at 7:30 and ends at 5:00.

In between, the kids take a rigorous selection of classes with teachers that are constantly striving to get them to college. They participate in academically rigorous enrichment opportunities and come in two Saturdays a month for mentoring and community service. Oh! And they do about two hours of homework a night. How do we get students willing to do all this work when their friends have an easy six hour day with little to no homework? We provide the kind of exciting field lessons that make all the extra worth totally worth it!

My Project

Generations of students have been inspired by the NASA space program, and I can hardly think of a better trip for middle school students in Florida to take! The Kennedy Space Center will prove to our students that the hard work that they are putting in can pay off in the kind of amazing future that space can promise to us. It is increasingly difficult to get kids curious about the universe around them, but the educational programs at the Space Center show kids the amazing applications of the science behind the space program, plus, gets them wondering what could be in the future. As our students climb the mountain to college, getting them to wonder about what could be, is about as valuable a gift as can be given!

Without amazing field lessons that excite our scholars and bring their education to life, much of what we do at KIPP would be ineffective.

It is really hard to sell a ten year old on a promise of overcoming the challenges their neighborhood presents to go to college. 11 year olds need to be sold by an exciting adventure to one of the coolest places in the country. 11 year olds want to see space shuttles, stories high in the air! 11 year old want to dream, and this trip will inspire their dreams!
