This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"A place for everything, and everything in its place." We teach our children that our belongings must be put away properly. That is no exception in the Music room, where we have precious instruments to care for. The OrffMobile will provide a space for the presentation and storage of our xylophones.

My students attend a public charter school in New York, and they are very eager to play instruments in my Music class.

Most of them are eligible for free or reduced priced lunch. Many of my students are the children of immigrants, or they are new to this country themselves. I know they do not have many opportunities outside of school to participate in musical activities, much less use high-quality musical instruments, which can be expensive.

My Project

My students will learn two important lessons from the presence of the OrffMobile: first, that an ensemble is bound together not only musically but physically as well; and second, that when we have high-quality possessions, we must take special care of them so they last longer. The OrffMobile fits four xylophones on one fold-out structure. That means four students can play accompaniment parts in close proximity. They will learn to listen to one another and make sure their sound is harmonious. Secondly, my students will see that instruments should not be left sitting on the floor. They will see that important possessions should be stored carefully on appropriate surfaces. This will transfer to how they care for their own possessions and other people's belongings. Furthermore, it will save me time during the lesson. Instead of having to carry four separate instruments, I can just roll out the OrffMobile, fold out the shelves, and have an Orff ensemble ready to play in no time.

My students deserve more chances to play in xylophone ensembles.

The OrffMobile will provide this opportunity both short-term and long-term. In the short-term, I will be able to quickly bring out the xylophones during my lessons, so I can include xylophone activities more frequently. Long-term, the OrffMobile will safely store the xylophones so they last longer. It will preserve our instruments so my students will get to experience them for years to come.
