Sowing Seeds for the Future: a Kindergarten Garden for All
Help me give my students the opportunity to engage with nature and learn powerful lesson for the future through gardening. This project includes seeds, tools and pots to create our Kindergarten Garden at our school.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The entrance to our elementary's Little School House is a path that crosses about through a large piece of land. There is nothing growing in this area other than grass. Considering this is the entrance to the building that houses Kindergarten, this land can be put to better use though the creation of a garden.
The materials requested in this project will help my students learn powerful lessons about nature, sustainability and life.
By engaging in the creation of a garden, students will benefit from learning about planning, problem solving and decision making. They will learn about growing plants, a lesson that can result in more sustainable and self sufficient life in the future. In addition, the process of planting, nurturing, and witnessing the results of their labor has innumerable benefits for a young child.
Included in this request are tools, soil, seeds and pots. The tools included are kids shovels, kids gloves, an adult gardening kit and a till. The till will help prepare the ground by loosening the compacted soil and clear the grass for planting.
I have also included soils for empty raised beds already in the school and for mixing with the ground soil for enrichment. The seeds and the pots are for students to have their own plant to care for and love. They will be taking those home at the year's end.
