My Students

When the school year is over, our goal is to release our third graders as independent, critically thinking, problem solvers and readers. The biggest challenge of accomplishing this goal is the lack of challenging yet grade appropriate texts

If you were to step into our classrooms, you would find a diverse group of animated students, eager to learn working with computers, text sets, books and each other.

We are located along the beautiful coast of South Carolina so our children are very familiar with the history and landforms in our area, but not aware of the different people and places around South Carolina and the world. The children are always excited to learn new things, especially about the place where they live, with the assistance of grade appropriate text and the use of computers to discover new information..

My Project

We need 180 South Carolina Story books and web access for the classroom. The Gibbs-Smith resources will enrich our students' experiences with vivid, challenging, and exciting literature. With the Gibbs-Smith material, students will be able to work collaboratively or alone towards becoming researchers, problem solvers, creative thinkers and the will discover South Carolina's rich history.

It is not very common to come across a resource that is age, content appropriate, and as engaging as the Gibbs-Smith material.

Third grade is the year when students are challenged to transition from learning to read, to reading to learn. The Gibbs-Smith resource provides explicit text features such as interesting pictures, captions, real life interviews, and explanations of important vocabulary readily accessible for any level of reader to gather meaning.
