Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Anyone who walks into our school building feels a unique sense of community. The students at my school are highly motivated to learn and be creative. They are well behaved with the support of teachers who are willing to collaborate with the best interest of the students in mind. Our school is 81% Hispanic and we work hard to teach the English language. More importantly, my school is Title I with 75% of the students on free or reduced-priced lunch.

Students love coming to music each week to be energized by singing, moving, or playing instruments.

Most of the time, music is a breath of fresh air for some of the struggling students because it is the “universal” language. Twice over the past few years, we have been a place where students and families seeking refuge from disaster in Puerto Rico have been able to enroll. Now, with the pandemic, over 75% of our students will be distance learning from home.

My Project

Soundtrap is a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) where students can create their own music and collaborate with each other while using computer technology. With Soundtrap, students can use pre-loaded instruments and loops to make a professional sounding piece of music. They can create a song on their own, or they can work with a partner in real time online, wherever they may be.

Having Soundtrap as an online tool will help make the new way of teaching and learning music a meaningful and worthwhile experience for my students.

Last March, when schools went into distance learning, I explored this product through a free trial and my students loved it! Lessons I created included exploring loops, adding orchestration to a simple folk song melody, adding a contrasting sections to the same song, and creating a story using sound effects. That was just three weeks worth of lessons! There is so much that students can learn from using Soundtrap about musical styles and elements, and it certainly brings out their creativity!

Now that we will be spending the foreseeable future at home, I would love to give my 4th and 5th grade students the opportunity to create music in this exciting way. Having Soundtrap as an educational tool is great way to give my students ownership of their music and something valuable that they can take away from the distance learning experience.
