This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The addition of a tenor recorder to our ensemble will make a meaningful difference in how my students learn and engage with music. Its deeper, richer tone expands our musical range and allows us to perform more complex, culturally diverse pieces that reflect the voices and stories of underrepresented communities. This instrument not only enhances our sound but also symbolizes our commitment to inclusion—giving every student, regardless of their musical background, a chance to contribute meaningfully to our shared performance.

As a teacher, my goal for this project is to use music as a lens through which students can explore racial justice, cultural identity, and social responsibility.

I want them to see music as a powerful form of storytelling and advocacy. By incorporating instruments like the tenor recorder and repertoire from a wide range of traditions, I aim to foster empathy, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation for the diverse world we live in.

What makes my students truly special is their openness, resilience, and passion for learning. They come from many different backgrounds, and they are eager to learn, to listen, and to lift each other up. They are not just learning to play music; they are learning to use their voices—through instruments and ideas—to make a difference. This project is for them, and because of them, and I believe that with the right tools, they can create something truly powerful.
