This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Everyone has their issues with public speaking... 1st graders and English Language Learners especially! Listening to peers speak is also difficult with so many distractions in a classroom- the sounds of kids outside, birds singing, rain hitting the window... we need help focusing!
Our Title I school has a high ELL/ESL population, and that percentage is even higher at the primary grades K-2.
In my classroom, at least 70% of the students speak a language other than English at home. These learners range from newcomers to the country, to students who are very proficient in English.
As expectations continue to rise in our school, district, state, and country, giving an answer to a question is simply not enough. Students are being taught to communicate their thought processes, opinions, etc. This allows the teacher to better assess skills and knowledge and correct misconceptions earlier. In order to do this, all in the classroom will need to be able to hear the speaker... that's where you come in! :-)
My Project
Learning content combined with the practice of a new language can be stressful. Young students also tend to "check out" often if they are not engaged when their peers or teacher are speaking. Having 2 microphones to pass around and speakers to project voices will increase student engagement, build confidence, and foster a classroom environment where students are eager to share. As the teacher, I'd be able to use the microphone during lessons on days when I feel my audience needs more engagement.
Our mission in our school and within my classroom is to create a learning environment where my students are confident learners and speakers.
I am asking for you to assist me in this mission. We have a picture in our heads of what this gift could do for us and we hope you can see it too!
