My Students

When you think of December's "sounds of the season," the first thing that comes to mind is.....Jingle Bells! There is no more happy or more festive way to describe the sounds of the holiday season!

I am the music teacher for about 540 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

Our school is a Title 1 school with a significant number of our children qualifying for free or reduced lunch. About 10% of our students have English as their second language, and about 8% of our students are considered homeless. I see each of my classes once a week for 45 minutes. Our school was built in 1931, and has a number of wonderful school traditions. One of the best-loved traditions is our annual all-school holiday sing. For "the sing," the entire school squeezes into our center hall, and for about 25 minutes, we all sing a variety of December holiday songs. With all the students, staff and a few parents who are able to squeeze in, we usually have more than 600 in attendance at "the sing." In their weekly Music class, my students sing, dance, play games and play instruments, all while learning how to build a sense of community with their classmates. I have worked very hard to ensure that my students are able to use instruments that are not only beautiful to look at, but have a beautiful sound as well, since for many of these children, the instruments in the music room are their only exposure to instruments. I want to be sure that the instruments we have will last for a long time, and thanks to a number of DonorsChoose sponsors, my students have access to wonderful musical instruments.

My Project

I am requesting four Colored Velcro Wrist and Ankle Bells, and sixty Wrist Bells Strap with 3 Bells. In addition to using these wrist bells with my kindergarten students, to play at our annual holiday "sing," we will also use the bells when we do holiday dances with my older students, such as Yesh and S'Vivon for Hanukkah. Also, the bells can be worn by my fourth grade students when they learn and perform Native American and Morris dances as part of their Virginia music studies.

This is an exciting experience for my kindergarten students, to be able to not only learn Hanukkah, Christmas and winter songs, but to sing them with their older siblings and neighborhood friends.

It never ceases to surprise me how many of these little ones have never sung the song, Jingle Bells, but how quickly they are able to pick up the tune and the words and sing it with gusto! Just imagine how wonderful it would be if they were able to play actual jingle bells while singing this song! I hope that as you have read this proposal, the joyful sound of jingling bells has helped you share this vision!
