We need a shed, ukuleles, guitars, djembes and harmonicas so students will be able to develop their musical talents and socialize in our school garden.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
One student, Nathalie, recognizes the importance of music in the lives of youth. Josh believes this will serve as a needed safe and therapeutic space where students can explore music and develop a skill that can help them build careers, and maintain their passion for music.
Students were asked what they felt was an "outlet", a source of emotional, psychological relief and therapeutic benefit, and what interests them professionally and in their leisure time - and together they brainstormed a way for the school to provide them with "outlets" that cater to their needs while sparking their interests. Thus, Sound Garden is a "music outlet" which will bring with it all the benefits of a life enriched by music.
Students expressed their desire for a space where they can work collectively or independently on projects of substance that they are passionate about and can progress in. Universally, students agreed music was a major inspiration in their lives that they found lacked a means of material expression - many students want, but do not have, access to instruments. Students expressed their desire to explore their musical capacities and many even expressed a desire to pursue musical careers, given the opportunity and education. That is when Sound Garden was conceptualized
Students with plans to pursue a music career will have a space to practice and develop their skill. In addition to all the ways that music helps develop the brain and cognitive functions, when students work together on music projects they will learn different types of communication and team work. Those students in charge of maintenance and supervision of the Sound Garden shed will learn about the importance responsibility and mindfulness in management. In addition to being incredibly educationally enriching, this space will be a great opportunity for students to take advantage of the benefits of music as a therapy-stress relief, facilitation/improvement of communication, alleviation of pain, promotion of wellness, etc.
In Their Own Words
The idea of our project is to create a space where students are free to explore their musical passion. This would include a shed which would hold a few ukuleles, a guitar, djembes, and harmonicas, amongst other instruments. The shed would be located in our school garden.
Since conceptualizing the project with my schoolmates I have helped in speaking with students about what they wanted out of the project and ensuring those needs and desires were met, and plan on continuing to work with student input throughout the project. I have also helped in choosing what instruments will be purchased, where the space will be located, the mission and vision of our project, getting other students involved in the project, and creating clear deadlines and outlines of our goal
This project is important to our community because our school lacks a musical program, our students lack musical opportunities and our community lacks a means of coming together. Sound Garden will encourage students to come together on school grounds making music during and outside of school hours. Performances will be a way for students to showcase music they have created alone or in groups while in the Sound Garden space, and to unite and communicate their passion for music as a community.
