My Students
I teach first graders at a Title 1 school. Many students in my class come from low income families and some are English language learners . They are capable, eager to learn, and very energetic.
My students love to build, create, and use their imagination.
They are hard workers. At times I have to remind them to take a break or they may miss the designated recess time.
I want to give them opportunities to express their creativity and make learning reading, math, and science more fun.
My Project
My center materials are limited. In the winter we have many inside recesses due to rain and snow. "Inside recess" day after day can be very dull. We have a few math center manipulatives to help pass the time, but my students really need more than a set of connecting cubes. "Play" needs to be more meaningful!
With magnetic blocks, Lego bricks, and STEM building bricks (with task cards), "play" becomes more purposeful.
One task may be to create a maze for a marble out of bricks. Another task may be to build a tic-tac-toe board out of Legos and then play a game with it. My students will have fun designing, creating, and sharing their creations.
Hot Dots Pens test student knowledge using a power pen that talks, lights up and makes different sound effects when students answer a question. I have chosen a set for advanced readers as well. The Hot Dots sets provide cards and booklets for student use. My students will be able to practice reading and math skills independently and at their skill level. The interactive pens will give students immediate feedback for their work.
