My Students
My students generally come from a high socioeconomic background so they are not lacking in opportunity. The challenge with my students is coming up with something new and innovative to capture their attention, inspire them, and push them to the next level. My students want to know how science relates to their lives. They are teens and by nature of their developmental level, they crave interaction and a way to fit concepts into their own experiences. I find this age level to be uniquely suited to project-based learning and peer collaboration. The students are fun to be around, positive, and able to be inspired.
My Project
The materials I chose to get for my students are things that seriously need updating. The spring scales I have at the moment are all stretched out and inaccurate for the students to use in class. They have a hard time measuring force with them because they are so worn out.
I bought travel-sized board games for an activity we do when learning about systems that I have been using for a few years now.
After using them this year, we noticed lots of missing pieces and the games are so small that it is hard to play. With normal-sized board games, the students can enjoy playing and learning at the same time.
Another material that tends to go missing are the safety glasses. Every year I lose at least one pair from a student taking it with them at the end of class and never returning them. I don't have enough for all my students this year so getting more glasses will help me keep my students safe during lab activities.
