Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a school-based occupational therapist, I work with students across all grade levels including preschool-5th grade. Many of the students who I work with have difficulties with various motor skills and sensory processing skills.

This month's theme is "Speak Out: Raise Awareness about a Problem in Your Community” The problem impacting my school is my students inability to communicate to make themselves understood, or process their emotions, which may lead to self-isolation, temper tantrums, or other behavioral issues.Some of my students will push, scream, cry, and throw items.

Any time a student cannot communicate their wants and needs, they will act out in a variety of ways.

My primary students are learning how to use their words to communicate with their peers. My students will use these hands-on manipulatives along with the alphabet and number toys to stack, sort, and match toys while communicating with each other. My students need help to communicate with one another and to express their wants and needs. While using these manipulatives, they will press, push, snap, scoop, and whack a mole while learning conflict resolution skills through play.

By engaging in play, my students will develop the language and communication skills to listen better, understand facial expressions, and read body language. They will learn to take turns and use language while they share and express themselves. If a student takes an item or throws an item, they will use language to say, "I don't like that?" or "Stop!" These manipulatives will help students develop their speech, their ability to think, confidence, control and how they relate to their peers and school staff. It will also boosts my student’s vocabulary and encourage my students to participate in group activities as well as take turns during play with others.
