This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The floor is too cold!" "My b..., ahem, bottom hurts!" Imagine my students' devastation when our gorgeous canary-colored Victorian couch and welcoming rug were destroyed due to an oh-too-common bedbug infestation and our reading area became a cold, linoleum stress test.

I am currently in a school with a 97% free lunch population.

I have opened up extra help sessions to all of my students Monday through Thursdays before school. The students in my class come from a background of diverse needs including special education, English as a second language, and temporary housing. Yet one-third of my class have achieved 100% attendance this year because they so highly value the importance of their education. These are students who come to school because it is a place of support and stability. But in this community we see typical symptoms of urban blight as a bedbug infestation took over our school and cost us so much of the furniture that made our classrooms such inspiring places to be.

My Project

My students love how cozy and welcoming I've made our classroom library and reading center and have relished their time listening to me reenact scenes from stories like Amazing Grace, Chrysanthemum, and Captain Underpants (for those days when we all need to let our hair down). They used to sit on our bright carpet and snuggle together when it was their turn on our couch and chime in during our favorite parts of the book. During center time, children took turns "playing school" and doing their character impressions as they read aloud to each other. But now that our room has been stripped of such amenities, the children fuss around during reading and spend more time rubbing their backsides than they do listening to the stories that once captivated their imaginations. These vinyl, vermin-resistant mats and cushions will enable them to be more comfortable and sit back and lose themselves in books like Where the Wild Things Are, without raising their own wild rumpus.

With your donation of reading cushions and foam chairs, you can help ensure that my students do not lose their love of reading and continue to focus on the softness of my voice as I read, rather than the hardness of the floor beneath their, well, you know ...
