Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our band program has a very storied past and was a voice for our inner city community. However, from financial down turns of the nineteen eighties until 2014, our band program had been shrinking and almost died out. In 2014, rededicated itself to grow our notable band program back.
Our band family is made up of both Hispanic and African American students who live in a lower socioeconomic community.
In fact, 99% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our school has been working very hard to regrow our band program so that our students can have equitable access to arts programs to that of more affluent communities. Our students are hard workers. We have grown the band and have grown its performance ability in kind, most of our students have less than a year of playing time, yet can play challenging music due to their dedication to making our band one of the best again.
My Project
Our jazz and concert band programs are growing rapidly. Our band family has grown from only 5 students at the beginning of 2014 to over 116 as of today. With such rapid growth, the ability to replace and gain new instruments is so important. A soprano saxophone will allow our students to play a more varied repertoire and give them access to an instrument that many schools in our area would never have in their inventory. The soprano sax would allow us to play upper-level music and play more modern jazz standards. Having an extra instrument will also allow the band to grow and let more people in the program.
By having access to a Soprano Saxophone, our already motivated band students will have the opportunity to play upper-level literature and ready themselves for performing in college concert or jazz bands, even if they do not wish to major in music.
Also, the new instrument will allow our band to perform more often and represent our community in many different festivals and competitions.
