Soprano Recorders for Primary Students

My students need soprano recorders and recorder stands.

My Students

Music is a universal language. My students have many abilities. I have non readers to gifted students. Music gives those of all abilities the capability to enjoy life more fully, no matter the language.

My school is a rural school with a population of approximately 500.

Almost 60% of our school is on free and reduced lunch. Transportation to this school is required- all students ride the bus or are driven to school by their parents. Approximately 20% of the school population has English as a second language. Most of the population is Hispanic. We currently have an Orff Music room with an Orff certified teacher. We, the teachers, have written grants for several years to keep this program alive. Wonderfully, our district has now assumed the majority of this cost having seen the benefit for our students.

My Project

My students need soprano recorders and recorder stands. Fortunately, we have many recorders on our campus. Our parent club generously bought these over 20 years ago. We have always used the recorders for third and fourth grades. I will now be teaching both second and third grade students soprano recorder during an elective. I will need more recorders to cover this expansion of services. Students will learn beginning songs, such as Three Blind Mice, which requires use of one hand and three notes. Student will learn to listen to each other, learn to echo me, and eventually learn to read music as we get toward the end of the year. Students will end the year playing songs which require both hands to form notes. The recorder stands are invaluable in keeping the instruments in good shape and work wonders in keeping us all healthy as the instruments air dry each day.

Music helps all of us enjoy life more fully.

Some of my students are destined to have successful college careers. Some will achieve success in helping professions that we, the public, will all rely on. Not one will regret coming to music class. Music is one subject that enhances life and therefore enhances school life.
