Soothing Spaces

Help me give my students a calming and sensory-friendly environment, to enhance student well-being, reduce sensory overload, and create inclusive learning spaces where every child can thrive.

My Project

The Soothing Spaces project will allow me to create a sensory-friendly classroom for my students who experience sensory challenges throughout the academic day.

To support self-regulation and provide a calming retreat, I would like to incorporate alternative work spaces in my room.

Enclosed spaces can be incredibly beneficial for autistic students, offering a sense of security, reducing sensory overload, and creating a safe environment where they can feel more at ease and less overstimulated.

Additionally, I hope to introduce alternative seating options to enhance students' comfort and engagement. Floor seating with rugs, cushions, and lap desks will offer a flexible workspace tailored to their needs. I also aim to provide three standing desks, giving students the option to stand while working—helping to reduce restlessness and improve focus.

When students feel overwhelmed by their environment, it can be difficult for them to concentrate, engage, and absorb new information. By creating designated spaces where they can decompress and regulate sensory input, they will be better equipped to return to learning with improved attention, reduced anxiety, and greater emotional well-being.
