Soothing, Safe, and Satisfying

My Project

Our students have been working hard to achieve academic success, especially in math and language arts bringing up our test scores. With all of the studying, tensions, stresses, "productive" struggles, and worries that go with the territory of "educating;" we wanted to provide safe, satisfying, and rewarding opportunities for students to unwind positively.

We have incorporated an after-school program in the fine arts where students 4-6th come to draw and paint.

This is our second year doubling in size with a waitlist. Our 40-plus students create art pieces on paper and canvases using acrylics, watercolors, colored pencils, and pencils on various themes and choices. As they create, they get to unwind, talk, share, plan, and work both independently and in groups showcasing their pieces and working together to create backgrounds for whole school programs.

Students build their self-esteem as they explain their displayed work at the culminating Art Showcase (evening/day viewing). Much of the artwork is very impressive showing real talent and promise in future careers. The money is for additional art supplies. We are using our own now and finishing the rest of our supplies from last year. This club is such a success! We would like to continue this endeavor. Not only can the students not wait to come to class, but they are keeping up academically so they won't miss any time with us. It is a positive and active club with hard work paying off in a rewarding manner of satisfaction and pride.
