Help me give my students quality musical picture books to aid with musical learning and literacy! These books will help me with distance learning and practicing social distance teaching while still providing quality education.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a large city and represent the wonderfully diverse culture of Houston, Texas. I have many bilingual students. My school has a large percentage of Spanish-to-English language learners AND Vietnamese-to English language learners!
Students can retain information better when presented with a variety of earning examples.
I often use illustrated song-books to aid understanding of the often archaic language, metaphors or idioms used in the poetry and lyrics of a song that may be unfamiliar to English language learners. When a picture is presented with the song, it helps things make much more sense!
My students love the books I do have, but a larger collection will bring more songs to their repertoire. More books means more literacy opportunities and more happy singing in my classroom!
My Project
I can use books a variety of ways in a music classroom. Music and literacy go hand in hand. Hearing words, phrases, metaphors and idioms in lyrics with pictures helps English language learners comprehend more. I can make cross-curricular tie ins with history, math, and science with books. I've also chosen a large variety of books to represent the diversity of my students so they can see characters like them in the songs and stories they hear. These books help me teach at a distance and provide an additional activity while instruments and group singing are off limits due to social distancing safety guidelines.
