Somewhere Over the Rainbow Xylophones

My Students

Our music class is an exciting place where everyone works together to create beautiful music through singing and playing instruments. This project will provide beginning xylophones for students to use and replacement mallets for our barred instruments.

My school is in a high growth area of our district and is expecting significant growth this next school year.

Every student attends music class at least once a week and we play instruments often. My students are enthusiastic learners from all over the world who love creating and learning about music. They give their best each day and take great delight in helping others. It is a real joy to teach students who are fully engaged in their learning. They are fine musicians who sing beautifully and who are making fine progress on their instrumental skills. One of the realities of teaching such a high volume of students is that even though our instruments and mallets are well cared for, they are beginning to wear out and we are beginning the process of augmenting our instrument collection in anticipation of growth while we replace equipment that is worn out.

My Project

The xylophones that I am requesting will be used primarily in the younger grades (K, 1st and 2nd). These xylophones are a great tool when we are learning about melody. The bars come off which provides flexibility to remove notes in order to ensure that fewer wrong notes occur. As students learn how to read music notation, we will use these xylophones in centers to give students the opportunity to independently practice the patterns they are learning. Additionally, the mallets that have been requested will be used with the full sized traditional Orff instruments both in the younger grades and more often with the older students (3rd-5th). Students will accompany their singing as they practice melodic, rhythmic and harmonic elements of music.

This project will make a difference because it will increase time on task in the music room.

With increased numbers next year we expect our class size in specials to be slightly larger than this year. These additional instruments and replacement mallets will mean less wait time for students between turns.
