My students need 13 books to replace the favorite titles that either grew legs or simply fell apart from repeated readings.

My Students
As literacy expert Richard Allington says, "If you aren't replacing part of your library collection every year, you are buying the wrong books."
My students are a group of developing readers from a small sub-rural high school in Michigan.
They want to explore the tough issues of life in a truly authentic way, and with their new-found love of reading, they understand that this kind of battle is possible through the imaginary rehearsals found in books!
My Project
Book Whisperer Donalyn Miller and fellow Nerdy Book Club member Katherine Sokolowski recently spoke about "Titles That Have Legs." They write, "Curating classroom libraries demands that we offer students books that stretch their imaginations and thinking, broaden their reading experiences, and engage them with reading. While we continually add new titles to our...classroom libraries, there is a core list of books that we replace every school year because the books become so worn our students can't read them, or they grow legs and wander away. In optimistic moments, we hope these books find new homes on our students' bookshelves. These titles have certainly found homes in their hearts." By supporting this project, the titles that have been so loved by past students can now find a way into the hearts of students to come.
Building a classroom library can feel like an impossible task in a high-poverty school.
Obviously, replacing books costs money, but when I am able to connect my students to those "just right" books it is truly priceless.
