This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our classroom lending library is filled with second hand books. My family and I scour second hand stores for decent looking books; graphic novels are the most special find because they are the most rare find at thrifts and also the most popular in our lending library.
This project will add clean, brand new books to our shelves for our students to borrow, recommend to one another, and talk about in our book club.
Nearly half of our campus are students that are labeled as “Emergent Bilingual”. Their first language was not English, and some are hesitant to write and speak in English (especially in front of other students)! I plan to create reading clubs, with a special focus on those students who need extra support in reading. Our book clubs will meet during lunchtime in my room or after school (which ever the kids decide). Our book clubs will get kids passing books around to each other, talking about them, recommending them, and writing about what they've read.
First, our club will unbox and sort through the graphic novels. As a group, they will decide on how to display the new books on our shelves. Then, I will challenge each member to take one home, read it, and make a poster for the book they read. Their poster will be like an advertisement for their graphic novels. Their posters and write-ups will help other students choose a graphic novel from the lending library.
Holding a new book in your hand - with all of its possibilities and dreams - is a special experience. Seeing brand new books on shelves will get kids curious and help build our community of readers!
