My Students
Do you have fond memories of reading that "special book" in elementary school? I am trying to create that same experience for my students with Charlotte's Web. Most of my students are not familiar with this classic tale. I want to provide the opportunity to share that experience with them.
My 2nd grade students are typical children with hopes to "make it big" as a ballerina or football star.
They believe that superheroes are real and that they will come to their rescue if anything bad should come their way. That being said, the majority of my students and their families have limited financial means. They are so innocent that they have no idea that bad things have already come their way. I've had students leave school on Friday without eating again until they return to school on Monday morning. I have students that freely mention, "My daddy got paid, now we have lights at our house again."
Some of my students move from place to place and even live in hotel rooms. With all of this weight on their seven year old shoulders, my students come into school ready to learn and give 100%. They don't even know that they are the superheroes.
My Project
Our class was invited to attend the theater to see a production of Charlotte's Web. For most of my students, this will be their first time attending the theater. They do not know what it is like to see actors or actresses perform on stage. In order to prepare for our trip, we are planning a Charlotte's Web novel study. I want to challenge my students to read a book beyond that of a typical second grade student.
If each student had their own copy of the book, they would be able to follow along, read, and reread for clarification and understanding during our novel study. I am hoping that the overall experience of this novel study turns them into lovers of literature and makes them become lifelong readers. I am planning to set the bar high and offer plenty of guidance and support to prove to them that they can reach for the stars and grab one. I often tell them, "You are AmeirCANs, not AmeriCAN'Ts!"
Please help to make our novel study a positive one by providing each student in my class with a copy of Charlotte's Web.
I have really high hopes to make this an amazing educational opportunity for my students. I'd like to do that without putting additional financial stress on their families. Thank you for considering to share your hard earned financial resources with my classroom and students.
