Solving the Rubik's Cube

My Students

"To dream the impossible dream..." The greatest value for students in learning to solve the Rubik's Cube is the realization that with knowledge and perseverance they can accomplish anything, no matter how seemingly impossible it may have at first seemed.

We are truly an international school, with over 35% of our students from other countries.

Our students come from primarily Nepal, Burma, Thailand, and several African countries, many in the U.S. for less than 2 years. 100% of our student body participates in the free breakfast and lunch program.

They are truly hard working fun children trying to adjust to life in the U.S. while continuing their culture from home.

My Project

I have requested twenty-six Rubik's Cubes so my students can learn to solve this classic puzzle. I want to teach them to solve the Rubik's Cube because, once they have mastered this, they will have proved to themselves that they can accomplish anything! After a bit of hard work, focus and determination, they'll be able to solve it, and there will be a noticeable shift in their thinking and their approach to other challenges. Holding the Rubik's Cube, twisting and turning the parts, also helps students grasp important math concepts including area, perimeter, volume, angles, algorithms and enumeration, among many other geometry, algebraic and general math topics. The learning process promotes deep thinking, and upon completion creates incredible feelings of pride and confidence. It is problem solving and critical thinking in its purest form.

They will learn patience and persistence.

They will learn to believe in their abilities, and they will learn to dream those impossible dreams.
