Solving the Case of the Missing or Broken Pencil

My students need a pencil pouch each to keep their pencils in their desk. My students need the pencils because the ones provided at school break easily.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The case of the missing or broken pencil is common in my class. I'm constantly having to stop a lesson to play detective (if the pencil is missing) or ask the pencil sharpener monitor to report for duty (if the pencil is broken). The sound of the pencil sharpener has become a known tune in room 25.

My students are energetic, hard-working boys and girls.

However, many have a hard time keeping track of their school materials. A lot of them spend more time searching for lost materials than actually working on their assignment. At our school, materials are hard to come by. When we do get the materials we need (it's like winning the lottery) they are not always the best quality and tend not to last.

My Project

The pencil pouches and pencils will help with the daily cases of the missing or broken pencil. I plan on giving each student a pencil pouch and approximately 5 sharpened pencils. Every Friday I will check each pencil pouch and the students who have all 5 pencils will receive a small reward. Lost pencils will be replaced, but no reward will be received by that student (hopefully this will motivate this student to try harder) . I got this idea from a colleague and I think it's a great way to teach my students to be responsible with their materials. I also sense it will enhance our classroom community. Students who have extra pencils in their pouch may decide to share with those students that are missing 1 or 2 pencils. Having 5 sharpened pencils at their desk will lesson the need to use the pencil sharpener and will allow me to do less detective work and more teaching. The students will be able to focus on their assignment and spend more time learning from me and each other.

We will have more time to learn from each other.

My students will learn to be more responsible and value their materials. Responsibility will help my students get ahead in the classroom and in life.
